BIO

Khaldoune Bencheikh is an international mixed media artist. He has shown his work locally in South Carolina and abroad: Morocco, France, Holland and the Biennale of Rome in 1999. He has also been featured through various media outlets. Currently, he is a MFA candidate in Studio Art at the University of South Carolina with an interest in community-based art projects. Khaldoune concentrates on conceptual portraiture. His work is a metaphorical reconstruction of memory as both a personal and collective experience. His use of unconventional materials transforms mundane objects into poetic art supplies.Similar to a mosaic, his portraits are weaved on glass, out of silk thread embedded in a clear binder. Thread is a metaphor for the precariousness of time that reduces living moments into fading memories. It also acts as a channel of communication that connects the present to the past and the fragment to the whole.His latest project in the "Reliquarium" series is the "Mosaic Garden", which is a composite portrait of the City of Columbia, SC, constructed from the fragmented memory of its residents. This project will be a repository of community possessions and a memorial site to celebrate the joined effort of the homeless and the rest of the community in beautifying the city.The "Mosaic Garden" will be launched in Columbia as a model to be replicated in both national and international venues.

"The Reliquarium Garden" project is a public mosaic mural covering the garden wall of Transitions, a homeless transitional center, currently being built on Main Street in Columbia, SC.This project intends to be a 650 square foot wall surface filled with community ceramic possessions, handmade tiles and stained glass. The vision behind this project is to be a memorial site commemorating the effort of an entire community in advocating for social justice through public art. The purpose of this community-based art project is to bring people together and help integrate the homeless back into the community. This action of volunteerism and civil engagement involves different segments of the population including the City of Columbia, businesses, schools, art institutions and residents. The homeless will play a major role by collaborating in the execution of the mural, which will provide a valuable opportunity for community education and professional development.This project uses art as an instrument to bridge the gap between the two separate worlds of homelessness and residence and will serve as a recording tool to permanently engrave the collective memory of the city in cured cement.

This item is, but not limited to, the following: a plate, mug, tea cup, saucer, knickknack, handmade tile, ceramic sculpture, etc.The purpose of your donations is to be an act of generosity and compassion toward the homeless.
